Piano Movers in Kenya for Upright and Grand Pianos

KejaPal are piano movers in Kenya who move upright and grand pianos for homes, schools and churches. We bring a piano dolly, straps, padding and a trained team, plan the route through doors and stairs, and set the piano down safely in its new room.

  • Piano dolly, straps and thick padding on every job
  • Three to six trained movers, depending on the piano
  • Homes, schools, churches and music studios

A piano is one of the heaviest and most delicate things in any home. An upright piano usually weighs 150 to 300 kg, while a grand piano can weigh 250 to 500 kg. Yet inside sits a cast-iron frame, thousands of moving parts and strings under great tension. One bad tilt or bump can crack the case, damage the keys or knock the whole instrument out of tune.

For that reason, piano moving is not a job for a general crew with a borrowed trolley. This page explains how we move pianos safely, what it costs and how to prepare.

Common problems

Why pianos need specialist piano movers in Kenya

Three things make pianos hard to move. First, the weight sits high and off-centre, so an upright piano can tip easily. Second, the legs and pedals are weak compared with the body and can snap if the piano is dragged. Third, stairs, tight corners and narrow doors leave little room for error.

That is why our piano movers in Kenya plan each lift before the day. We measure doors and stairs, check the floor at both ends and decide how many people and what equipment the job needs.

Piano Moving

Equipment we use

  • Piano dolly. A low, strong platform on wheels that carries the piano's weight on flat ground.
  • Lifting straps. Wide straps that spread the load across the movers' shoulders and backs.
  • Piano board. A padded board for grand pianos, which travel on their side with the legs removed.
  • Thick blankets and film. To protect the polished case from scratches and dust.
  • Ramps and stair boards. For steps, kerbs and the truck's loading edge.

Common problems

How we move an upright piano

  1. Protect. First, we close and lock the lid, then wrap the piano in thick blankets and film.
  2. Lift onto the dolly. Next, two or three movers tilt the piano slightly and slide the dolly underneath.
  3. Move to the door. The team rolls the piano slowly, with one person guiding and others steadying the sides.
  4. Stairs and steps. On stairs, the team uses straps and boards, taking one step at a time.
  5. Load and secure. In the truck, the piano stands against the front wall and is strapped in place.
  6. Unload and place. At the new home, we reverse the process and set the piano on its final spot.

How we move a grand piano

Grand pianos need more steps. The team removes the lid, pedal lyre and legs, then turns the piano onto its straight side and straps it to a padded piano board. After that, the piano travels on its side, well padded and secured. At the new home, we reverse the process and reattach the legs and lyre. As a result, the piano never rests on its delicate legs during the move.

How piano moving in Kenya is priced

Every piano move is priced after we know the piano type, the stairs and the route. Stairs, long carries and the type of piano make the biggest difference.

Moves to other towns, such as Nakuru, Kisumu or Mombasa, are quoted separately. In those cases, the piano often travels as part of a long-distance move.

Tuning after the move

Even a perfect move can shift a piano's tuning, because temperature and humidity change between homes. So we suggest waiting two to four weeks for the piano to settle, then calling a piano tuner. This applies especially to moves between the highlands and the coast, where the air is very different.

If you are not sure where to find a tuner, music schools and church musicians often know local tuners. Also, avoid moving a piano in heavy rain if you can. Check the forecast on the Kenya Meteorological Department website when you pick a date, especially during the long and short rains.

Moving pianos for schools and churches

Schools and churches often move pianos between halls, classrooms and chapels, or to a new campus. Our piano movers in Kenya plan these moves around services and term dates. We can also move other instruments, such as drum kits, organs and sound equipment, at the same time. For full institution moves, see our school and church moving page.

Common problems

Buying or selling a second-hand piano

Many pianos in Kenya change hands privately, through schools, churches or online sellers. If you are buying one, ask our piano movers in Kenya to look at the access before you pay. For example, a piano on a third floor with a narrow staircase may cost more to move than you expect. In addition, check the piano's condition with a tuner, because repairs can be expensive.

If you are selling, we can collect the piano and deliver it to the buyer on the same day. That way, neither side has to arrange transport, and the piano travels safely.

Common problems

How to prepare for piano moving day

  • Clear a wide path from the piano to the door, and remove rugs that could slip.
  • Remove photos, ornaments and music books from the top and inside the piano bench.
  • Close and lock the lid if it has a lock, and keep the key with you.
  • Choose the final spot in the new room, away from windows, heaters and outside walls.
  • Tell us about steps, narrow gates, gravel paths or tight corners at both homes.

Digital pianos, keyboards and organs

Not every instrument weighs hundreds of kilos. Digital pianos and keyboards are much lighter, but they are full of electronics. Therefore we pack them in their original boxes where possible, or wrap them in blankets and move them flat. Meanwhile, stands, pedals and cables go in a labelled bag, so set-up is quick.

Church organs and large electric organs sit somewhere in between. They are heavy, awkward and often fixed to a platform. In that case, we visit first, check how the organ is fixed and plan the lift with the church's musician or technician.

Storing a piano

Sometimes a piano needs to wait between homes. For example, a family may move abroad for a year, or a new house may not be ready yet. A piano can stay in our storage, standing upright on a pallet, wrapped and away from outside walls. However, long storage can affect tuning and wood, so plan for a tuning when the piano comes out.

Why not move a piano yourself?

Of course, we understand the wish to save money. Still, a piano is one item where DIY often costs more. Friends without straps or a dolly risk injuring their backs and fingers. In addition, a dropped piano can crack its frame, which is often beyond repair. Even a small tilt on the stairs can snap a leg or damage the floor. A trained team costs far less than a new piano or a hospital visit.

Why choose our piano movers in Kenya

We move pianos regularly for families, schools, churches and music teachers. Our crew knows how to balance the weight, read the stairs and protect the finish. Moreover, we plan each job in advance, so there are no surprises on the day. Piano moving in Kenya should feel calm and controlled, and that is exactly how we run every job.

Costs and pricing

Getting a fair price for piano movers in Kenya

A fair price for piano movers in Kenya starts with an assessment, not a price list. First, we look at your items by video call, photos or a short visit. Next, we send a written quote listing the crew, the truck and any extras. Then we talk it through, and you can adjust the scope to suit your budget. Finally, we confirm the agreed price in writing, so everyone knows exactly what is included before the crew arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How many people does it take to move a piano?

An upright piano usually needs three to four trained movers. A grand piano or a piano going up stairs needs five or six.
